APP’s (Asia Pulp & Paper) corporate vision is to become the 21st century’s number one Pulp and Paper Company with the highest international standards in world, and with the strongest commitment to providing superior value to customers, shareholders, employees and the community. We present here the synopsis of APP Group, its sustainable operations, presence in India and various manufacturing facilities.

.

.

APP

Today, APP is a fully integrated pulp and paper company producing Bleached Hardwood Kraft Pulp (BHK) and a wide range of paper and packaging products, from commodity-grade base paper to value-added art paper, cast coated paper, tissue, speciality papers, carbonless, stationery and office products including cut size photocopy papers.

The company has also developed digital coated and pre-print papers that are gaining fast recognition and are widely accepted in the printing industry.

From a very humble beginning, APP has now evolved into an industry leader with a combined pulp, paper and packaging grades capacity of over 15-16 million MT/annum in Indonesia/China. As APP expands its interests and outreach, the company is continuously building from its base of core competencies. The company has taken steps to reinforce and build on its regional market position through the introduction of higher quality products and enhancements, marketing initiatives, process and productivity improvements as well as investments in new technology.

APP’s future depends on expanding economies worldwide and hence has strengthened its efforts to protect and preserve the environment. Through its exclusive fiber suppliers, the company reforestation programs have to date, seen approximately 440,000 hectares replanted with more than 550 million fast maturing Acacia trees. All the group pulp and paper mills in Indonesia have already started using environmentally friendly manufacturing procedures that are in line with APP’s high internal standards of pollution control and environmental safety.

The company has launched a group-wide performance improvement effort dubbed ‘Reaching the Sky’ which is driven by high performance vision and ‘Olympic’ performance targets set by the management, internally termed ‘Management By Olympic Standards’ (MBOS). These systems set clear measurable targets at various operating subsidiaries for areas such as service and efficiency improvements and cost reductions. These include competitions held at its exclusive fiber supply companies to further improve cost saving and increase quality and quantity yields at both plantation and harvesting operations. The management is committed to increasing long-term value rather than focusing on short-term gains at the expense of future growth. The company will continue to focus on expanding its profitable businesses, improving profit margins and effectively managing its asset base.

Sustainability in all Operations & Action Plan

APP, in line with its commitment to sustainability – is stepping up and further improving the effective and long standing programs it has in environmental protection, conservation, and community relations & development. To achieve this, the company is developing strategic partnerships, improving raw material chain-of-custody and conservation management under the management of Forestry Division.

APP sources its raw material for pulp from sustainable plantations and residues of plantation development in degraded forest / wasteland. APP is committed to be socially, environmentally and economically sustainable in all its operations. For the purposes of implementation, the company utilizes the definition of sustainability, which consists of three pillars – social, environmental and economic. Following improvements to, and expansion of, its programs, the Company has achieved several significant milestones.

APP has since released its Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) which is a stepped, time-bound plan for achieving sustainability in all operations. The key initiatives included creating a contiguous conservation park in Riau Province, Sumatra, and establishing new operating procedures. The SAP also provides a blueprint for the company’s fiber procurement and explains how the company will meet its market commitment to source all wood supplies from plantation-grownforests.

APP’s Fiber Supply

To fulfill APP’s commitment to use plantation-grown fiber, APP established additional renewable sources of fiber supply in 2004. Those new sources, totaling 222,425 ha of plantation forests, will increase the total planted area of APP’s exclusive fiber suppliers (as of December, 2009) to 900,000 ha.

Mr. Rohit Raina, Director, APP India

APP in India

APP in India has been marketing and selling its products since last 15 years and we have seen a tremendous growth in terms of paper consumption and also change in customer mindset. The printing industry is one of the biggest and fastest growing sectors in India, after China and keeping in view this amazing growth in literacy and continuous demand for printing and packaging requirements of a rapidly progressing trade and industry, we have planned opening up of more branches in major metros so as to service the customer and understand the challenging trends in the consumer preferences, as said by Mr. Rohit Raina.

He also mentioned “we need not to compare with products supplied from other international or domestic mills. APP has maintained and expanded aggressive quality assurances programmes to ensure that the product meets the promise, which has made APP grow into “force to reckon with” in the pulp & paper industry. India is moving up the value chain. Price is important but it is not the only thing. As you move up the value chain, cost becomes less important quality determines the edge in competitiveness”.

One of the cornerstones of APP’s Sales and Marketing operations is its product development and customer service. The ability to specialize also includes the ability to produce high quality products. The focus on product development and customer service is giving APP a strong competitive edge in the market. With demand expanding as market conditions improve, the company is well placed to deliver customer needs.

In a free market economy, consumers including both trade as well as end user-the printer have a wider choice, as APP has to offer more in terms of quality, price and more so technical support, which has lead to a fierce competition and demanding market conditions.

Further Mr. Raina added “the India market is becoming increasingly attractive to global producers, given its size and growth rate. Indian paper producers will witness stiff competitions from international paper producers in their efforts to build their share in a growing market, by 2012”.

Federation of Paper Trade Association (FPTA) organized its 50th AGM in Bangalore from Sep 17 to 19, 2011 with the theme “Paper- Going Green”. The AGM was attended by over 700 dignitaries from the paper industry across India, including representatives from paper traders, paper mills. Leading paper manufacturers were present during the event such as Ballarpur Paper Industries, The West Coast Paper Mills, ITC, Seshasayee Paper & Boards Ltd, The Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills, The Mysore Paper Mills and many more. The agenda was to explore and discuss various issues related to the paper industry. The dignitaries reviewed the existing status of the industry, discussed future challenges and shared inputs on the emerging business scenario for the next decade.

L to R : Mr. Satyapal Gupta, Mr. Tejraj Jain, Mr. Shekhar Chandak

Mr. Shekhar Chandak, the outgoing president of FPTA said “Paper trade is growing in leaps and bounds with the export and import business also growing at an exponential rate. The growing Indian economy also indicates a further increase in paper trade. The main drivers would be the growing printing and publishing industry, literacy, changing demographics, growing consumerism, mall culture and so on”.

Mr. Tejraj Jain, President of FPTA said: “The theme of this conference “Paper Going Green” was chosen deliberately because the FPTA want to let everyone know that paper is an eco-friendly product. The major manufacturers have their own captive plantations. The saplings grown in 3 to 5 years are used as the raw materials and then re-grown contrary to the views that paper mills destroy forests. The paper industry replenishes more than it takes and ensures the sustainability of our forests by planting more than 1.7 million trees every single day. The Indian paper manufactures are undertaking backward integration through social farm forestry and setting up captive pulping capacities”.

Mr. Yogesh Agarwal CEO, Ballarpur Industries Ltd.

During the program Mr. Yogesh Agarwal, CEO, Ballarpur Industries Ltd. gave a synopsis of the Indian paper industry, “We have reached to a tipping point where the growth of 7 to 9% is substantially good to suggest the structural changes in manufacturing, trading and industry as a whole. Our global footprint is just 2.5% i.e. 10 million tons out of 390 million tons globally while we have 16.5% of the global population. The next decade would mark the growth trajectory for the Indian pulp & paper industry where we will contribute in excess of 10% to the global paper consumption as compared to current share of 2.5% only. It’s natural for the country like India where more than 50% of the population is less than 25 years old, having the per capita consumption of 9 kg against the global average of 58 kg to start contributing in the meaningful way.

Further he added: “Earlier most of the installations taking place were second hand but in the last 5 years or so the industry has gone for new and latest technology justifying the growth of 7 to 9%. In the recent years our customers i.e. printing industry have invested well and have grown more than the CAGR of paper industry. This has given us more headroom to expand. The market is becoming more and more demand driven as the supply constraint is being removed. Nowadays supply being opened up and is creating its own demand”.

“Today one word that defines the Indian pulp & paper industry is the Transition with regard to raw material, technology, capital employed, distribution etc. The another important factor is that India is recognized by the world and is being seen as the potential destination in manufacturing, merchandising etc. so we can see some healthy collaborations in future. Smart companies identify the market dynamics and convert them into opportunities and BILT being committed to the industry has identified the same and has grown organically and through acquisitions”.

Started by Late Mr. Mitthan Lal Jain, MLM India Limited established in 1948, is a prominent importer and indentor of paper, paperboard, pulp and newsprint in India. Initially, they started catering the domestic market then in 1997, they went into imports. There vast level of experience since 1948 has made them a reliable & trusted partner for their customers. A one stop shop which provide a total paper solution to all its customer’s requirements. In a brief chat with Mr. Vinay Jain, Managing Director of MLM India Ltd, he enlightened us about the different spheres of his business, plans ahead and his views on trading.

Throwing light on their mission he told “our main aim is that in the next 10-15 years we should operate in the entire 7 continents having offices in respective continent. Till date there is no Indian paper trader who went global and we wish to be global. Presently, we deal in all the specialty and commodity grades covering approximately 70 to 80 grades. We are pretty strong in technical grades and possess fairly good knowledge and carry connections worldwide which keeps us ahead in the race.”

Talking about their service he said “we have logistically well-appointed service departments to ensure an effective, efficient and reliable service. Our strategy and financial strength allows us to focus on long term partnerships. Our experience has taught us that if we serve clients well, the success will follow. We constantly strive to anticipate the rapidly changing needs of our clients and develop new services to meet those needs.”

Our main strengths are knowledge, risk taking abilities and the financial ability. In this time of inflation we are looking for the opportunities to grow. The important thing is that we want to learn. Further adding on marketing strategy, “we have chosen to go fast rather than slow and learn from our mistakes. We are importing mainly from Europe and America and now have entered into Asian market. In India everyone is looking for the alternate supply source and that is what we are encashing on. To cater the various need of the customers we participate in most of the exhibitions whether India or abroad.”

On plans ahead “my next generation is going to be global. We are planning to expand our global footprint. Our focus is more on BRIC countries as they are the developing economies. In the last 2 years we have established ourselves in the Middle East and now we are targeting African markets, South America and then Russia.”

Expressing the importance of imports of stock lot papers, he added “If there have been no imports of stock lot paper in India then there could have been scarcity of paper and perhaps there could have been mismatch in the prices.”

Middle East’s annual consumption of paper will increase to 29 tons by 2020, from 18 million tons in 2010, according to Asia Pulp and Paper, the second largest paper manufacturer and supplier in the world with operations in more than 65 countries. This was revealed at the conclusion of Paper Arabia, 2011 which concluded with key players agreeing that the digital boom in the Middle East is not largely affecting the printing of paper as seen from the fact that UAE is among the highest consumers of paper in the world despite the increase penetration of electronic pads in the country.

Suresh Kilam, Executive Director, APP said: “With the recent unrest in some countries, the traders have grown more cautious and have adopted a wait and watch approach. They have to buy the paper in cash and they don’t want to take risks. So in countries which are going through rough political climate, the business is on hold but that doesn’t mean that the business isn’t growing in the Middle East and growth in countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt is tremendous.”

On the side line of Paper Arabia 2011 Team Paper Mart had an interaction with Mr. Satish Khanna, General Manager, Al Fajer discussing about the paper industry in Middle East, development of the show over the years, their diversification plans and commitment to the show. Excerpts

Talking about the paper industry in Middle East he said: “It is very promising and is growing at the exponential rate. It has been on the move and the value of the Middle East printing substrates is forecasted to reach $5.0 billion in 2012. UAE is now on the verge of becoming the printing hub, earlier China did the same thing and their industry became number one. We need the same impetus. Paper converting is already booming in this region but for paper manufacturing I don’t see an immediate future.”

Highlighting the development of the show over the years he said: “People have accepted the show from the 1st year of its inception. Over the years we have only improved the quality of the exhibitors, which gives a very good platform for the visitors. Now, we need to grow in size and for that we have planned out some strategic moves which we will announce pretty soon. Presently, the majority of visitors are from trading community.”

On the diversification plans he said “this year we did the show in Kenya likewise we are planning to organize Paper Africa 2012 in Durban, South Africa. The paper industry has also shown the promising future in this region.”

On the success of Paper Arabia 2011 he told: “it’s the first-of-its-kind industry expo attracted over 6120 trade visitors from more than 85 countries. Big names such as APP, Abu Dhabi National Mill (ADNPM), Orient Links and others participated in full force in Paper Arabia 2011 and they introduced new technologies and products and concepts such as new textured tissue by ADNPM which received lot of attention by visitors. This year many companies offered environmentally friendly products based on agricultural or post consumer wastes.”

Al Fajer is totally dedicated to this industry and would like to see this industry growing he concluded!
