ebook readerRavi DC, CEO – DC Books, the promoter of e-book reader, believes that the future of publishing is linked with the digital books and in his quest for the business models to keep up with the times, identified an exclusive eBook reader for the Indian market. Spurred by the success of Sony and Amazon in the US market, DC Books plans to introduce its own model of the eBook reader in the Indian market with features specially developed for the target market. The technological partnership is being provided by California Software Company Ltd., a Chennai based company with considerable expertise in technology.
Paper Mart: What kind of an e-book reader is it?
DC BOOKS: The e-reader will be the size of a book, (approx) 185mmX125mmX11mm, weighing about 200gms. The basic model works through the internet and the high-end model has an inbuilt sim card similar to the mobile phone, which enables connectivity on the move. It can store up to 1000 books and has many user friendly features like multi language support and text to speech facility.

DC: The easy to carry reader comes with features like e-Ink paper-like display for easier reading even in bright-light conditions, advanced touch screen, inbuilt storage of 1GB which is expandable, zoom in and zoom out option with 5 different font sizes for easy and enjoyable reading, MP3 player functions, Text to Speech for both English and Indian regional languages.
The device also supports various file formats like txt, rtf, html; image formats gif, jpeg, bmp, png; audio files mp3, aac and allows to communicate using GSM, GPRS, G3, Wi-Fi and USB helping in sending and receiving of messages and also to explore the net.
PM: What are the benefits derived from the reader for the public?
DC: The easy to carry reader comes with features like e-Ink paper-like display for easier reading even in bright-light conditions, zoom in and zoom out option with 5 different font sizes for easy and enjoyable reading, MP3 player functions, Text to Speech for both English and Indian regional languages and messaging similar to mobiles.
PM: What is the price range of the e-book reader?
DC: The cost will range between Rs.12, 000/- and 20,000/- depending upon the model and the features pertaining to the particular model.
PM: Will this e-book reader compliment or replace the existing publications (hard copy)?
DC: Electronic books and readers are becoming increasingly popular in the developed markets like the U.S. Considering the obvious advantages and prospects like higher profit margins and environmental sustainability, avoiding the use of paper, etc. In India, the digital books are expected to co-exist with the physical books for some more time, but ultimately they will replace the physical books.
