Top Paper Companies in INDIA – 2015

Top Paper 1Paper industry today is reeling under unimpressive growth both globally and domestically. While some of the factors behind the contracting growth globally may also be valid for India, the Indian paper industry has different set of growth impeding causes. The global pulp and paper industry has shrunk over the past few years, primarily owing to the shift towards digital media and paperless communication across most developed economies; while in India it’s primarily linked to sluggish GDP growth over past 2-3 years and availability of raw material.
Moreover, the paper industry in India differs vastly from those in other paper manufacturing countries both in terms of present status and future outlook. At present, the paper industry in developed countries is matured from the perspectives of product, technology and demand; while India has miles to cover in all these aspects as it is one of the most rapidly emerging economies of the world like its other Asian counterparts. The shift from the West to the East in near past has been perceptible, and major international players are eying India as one of their preferred manufacturing destination as is borne by recent flurry of deals and acquisitions.
Also, rapidly increasing demands in packaging segment have partially offset the decline in the growth of other segments. As a whole, the industry is expected to shift its focus toward packaging materials and sanitary products, its two most promising segments for growth.
The rising wood pulp prices have led to the growth in recycled paper usage. Its share dropped from 4 percent to 1.7 percent by 2013. But, estimates say that the recycled segment will grow at 2.5 percent annually in the coming decade. Additionally, recycled fiber or waste paper is not adequately available, given the country’s low recycling rate of 20 percent which obviously would be ramped up given the industry’s commitments towards it.
Top Paper 4Overall, the Indian paper industry’s present state of sluggishness is only transient and would not last longer as the fundamentals on which its growth are hinged are stronger than the factors impeding its growth presently. Standing at one of the lowest per capita consumption of 9 kg, the way is only up. Additionally, rising populations, favorable demographics with the largest chunk as youth, steadily improving literacy level, burgeoning middle class, the govt.’s commitment to sprucing up indigenous manufacturing, etc. are conspicuous indicators to rising paper demands in coming times. The Indian paper demand is likely to grow at least by 6-8 per cent annually.
With all that said, it would be interesting to look into balance sheets and other performance statistics of the Indian paper companies as to how they are weathering the downtrend of growth, gearing up for future by investing in process and technology, and embracing new sustainability commitments.
Paper Mart’s Top Paper Companies in India is a biennial survey of all operating paper manufacturing enterprises of India to come up with a ranking list based on various key parameters. The list is a comprehensive list of the India’s largest, most powerful paper companies, as measured by production, turnover, net profit, growth rate (in both turnover & net profit), and net worth. We use a separate score for each of these metrics, and publish separate rankings accordingly for each as one barometer alone would present a biased and incomplete account. These five metrics are fundamentally the bedrock of our ranking calculation as these are objective and quantitative in nature.
However, other parameters such as CSR, water & energy consumption, exports, etc. are also included to highlight the all-round and qualitative development of the companies. Our survey and the declared rankings are in no way exhaustive, and are just indicator of overall landscape of the Indian pulp and paper industry.

Formation of Self Help Groups, Credit Co-operative Society helping a large number of women to gain financial independence through micro enterprise ventures has been the key highlight.
Education for the Underprivileged- Education is a critical component of any development programme. BILT’s CSR programmes focus on the improving the levels of learning in children in the age group of 6 to 14 years. These projects help augment government medical services at the grass-roots through village health workers. The availability of health providers at the doorstep gives timely help to communities on their minor health issues and better awareness regarding diseases and their prevention.
HIV/AIDS Prevention- The HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention programme covers employees, their families, community members and high-risk groups such as truckers and transporters who work with the group companies. The HIV/AIDS awareness programme has reached over 200,000 people at the workplace and in the communities. Natural Resources Management & Preservation of Environment- Responsiveness towards a cleaner and safer environment is an important commitment that includes ensuring proper management and regeneration of water, waste management & preservation and conservation of forests. Over years, Bilt has worked closely with the communities & irrigation department of Govt. of Maharashtra for rehabilitation of the Canals, Renovations of the Check-dams and Water Harvesting Structures and Nala Plugs. These structures have been de-silted and major & minor repair works were carried out so as to increase their efficiency of holding rain water. Deepening of village ponds and putting up Bore-wells for drinking water purpose, well recharges are some of the other examples of the work undertaken at plant sites Bhigwan near Pune in Maharashtra & Jeypore in Koraput District, Odisha.
