Chile’s forest products company Empresas CMPC is considering constructing another bleached hardwood kraft pulp mill in the Brazilian federal state of Rio Grande do Sul. The new facility will be built in the municipality of Barra do Ribeiro, more than 30 kilometers away from CMPC’s existing pulp mill in Guaíba.
The project will reportedly involve a total investment of more than USD 4.5 billion, of which USD 4 billion will be reserved for the new pulp production unit, USD 420 million for road infrastructure works and USD 150 million for the development of a new port terminal in Rio Grande and expansion of the existing port in the city of Pelotas.

As per the company, the project will be submitted to CMPC’s board of directors for final investment decision in mid-2026, following a process of technical study and environmental assessment. Once the decision has been made, the company will complete the work within three years.

CMPC has been operating in the state of Rio Grande do Sul since 2009. The company runs a BEK pulp mill in Guaíba with a production capacity of 2.4 million tonnes per annum.
