As the pulp and paper industry undergoes transformation towards sustainability, leading to environmental concerns and regulatory pressures, the companies are increasingly turning to a revolutionary soot blowing system, which not only optimizes their production processes, but also helps them in achieving their sustainability goals by minimizing their carbon footprint.
A product from leading cleantech company Heat Management, the High Impact Sootblowing System (HISS™) uses advanced automation and impactful cleaning methods to improve boiler performance, save energy, and reduce emissions.
In the traditional method, sootblowing in both the entry and exit stroke wastes nearly 50 percent of the steam since 90 percent of the cleaning effect is done at the entry stroke. However, HISSTM cleans efficiently by sootblowing in one direction and overlapping the lances. With HISSTM, several sootblowers can be operated in parallel with or without return steam, which means more sootblowing, less steam, and more easily removed ash.
One of the key ways in which HISS™ contributes to sustainability goals is through enhanced energy efficiency. Inefficient boiler operation can lead to excessive fuel consumption, resulting in higher energy costs and increased greenhouse gas emissions.
The patented HISS technology transforms a steam sootblowing system into an effective tool that handles clogging and increases the efficiency of power and recovery boilers. It reduces the steam consumption by 45 percent per sootblower, increases the company’s electricity production, and uses cheaper fuels for the process.
The best thing about HISSTM is that it works on all soot blower valves/brands, such as Rosink, Clyde Bergemann, Diamond Power etc. It increases the sootblowing capacity of a company by 100 percent without installing new sootblowers or consuming more steam.

By implementing HISS™ technology, the pulp and paper mills are able to maintain peak boiler performance, thus reducing energy waste and improving overall efficiency. The system’s precise cleaning capabilities ensure that boilers operate at maximum efficiency levels, ultimately translating into significant energy savings and reduced operational costs for companies.
Zellstoff Pöls is one of many pulp and paper mills that saw an increase in boiler performance after installing HISS™. After evaluating the project at the Austrian mill, it was concluded that they had increased their electricity generation by 1,5MW, corresponding to 12.75 GWh annually.
Furthermore, HISS™ plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, a critical component of sustainability initiatives. Carbon emissions from industrial processes, including those in the pulp and paper sector, contribute to climate change and environmental degradation.
By optimizing boiler performance and minimizing soot buildup, HISS™ helps mitigate emissions associated with fossil fuel combustion. Cleaner boilers result in lower emissions of greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide and methane, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and reduce the industry’s environmental impact.
Another example of Heat Management’s customers that saw a significant change in their emissions was Sappi Gratkorn. The benefits for the environment of saving steam are linked to conserving more energy and reducing fuel & water consumption when producing the steam. After installing HISS™, Sappi Gratkorn concluded that they had saved 43 percent of their annual sootblowing steam and had halved the time for their cleaning cycles, higher than the initial guarantee from Heat Management.
Comparing the costs of implementing the system and their savings in annual costs linked to steam sootblowing, Sappi Gratkorn had a return on investment in less than a year after commissioning. Due to increasing the load of their boiler, their savings can even go beyond what was initially expected from the savings of steam costs.

In conclusion, the adoption of HISS™ technology represents a significant step forward for the pulp and paper industry in achieving its sustainability goals. By improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and enhancing operational performance, HISS™ contributes to a more sustainable and resilient future for the sector. One-way, overlapping sootblowing should be the new industry standard for sootblowing.
For sustainability managers, embracing HISS™ offers a pathway toward meeting regulatory requirements, optimizing resource utilization, and driving long-term value for both businesses and the environment. As the industry continues to evolve, HISS™ stands out as a pioneering solution that underscores the symbiotic relationship between sustainability and innovation in the pursuit of a greener, more sustainable future.
The patented system disrupts the “how we have always done it” approach to energy-intensive steam sootblowing. By operating the existing steam sootblowing system in a smarter and less wasteful way, half the steam and half the time can be saved. This leads to increased boiler efficiency, availability, and lifetime without installing any new sootblowers or rebuilding the boiler.
