The permanent closure of International Paper’s Red River containerboard mill in Louisiana by April 2025 is expected to reduce its annual containerboard capacity by approximately 800,000 tons.

International Paper, global leader in sustainable packaging solutions, has announced permanent closure of its four facilities in the United States, including the Red River containerboard mill, located in Campti, Louisiana.
Other facilities to cease operations by the end of April 2025 include a recycling plant in Phoenix, Arizona; a box plant in Hazleton, Pennsylvania; and a sheet feeder facility in St Louis, Missouri.

The Red River containerboard mill closure is expected to reduce the company’s annual production capacity for the containerboard by approximately 800,000 tons.
Mr. Tom Hamic, executive vice president and president, North American Packaging Solutions, International Paper, said the company was undergoing a transformational journey to become a stronger sustainable packaging solutions company. A critical step in this journey was to streamline IP’s footprint to focus investments on facilities that will best serve customers and accelerate strategic initiatives to improve quality, reliability and service delivery.

In total, 495 hourly employees and 179 salaried employees will be affected. The company will work to minimize the impact on employees by using attrition, retirements and current vacancies at other International Paper locations, he added.
