‘Top Paper Companies in India’, conducted biennially by Paper Mart, is intended to provide the industry readers a quick glimpse of the Indian pulp and paper industry in terms of how major companies are doing financially and production wise including other vital parameters such as CSR, conservation approaches, technology, etc. The listing this year may exhibit some major disruptions in rankings because of drastically varying performance of few top companies in the last two years.
The Indian paper industry accounts for 3 percent of world’s paper production with a turnover of Rs. 500 billion approximately and contribution to exchequer Rs. 45 billion. The industry has been growing sufficiently over the last few years but not at desired rate. Demand for paper has been growing at around 8 percent per year for some time and the production grew at CAGR of 13.3 percent during 2011-15. According to industry estimates, the domestic market or consumption of paper is over 16 million tonnes, with over 2 million tonnes being imported.
However, another estimate shows to total production at 16.63~ million tonnes at the end of 2014-15 along with consumption peaking at 17.42 million tonnes during same period. The data amply shows the consumption level rising faster than the production capacity. By 2024- 25, under the baseline scenario, domestic consumption is projected to rise by 23.5 million tonnes; and in the optimistic scenario, consumption is expected to rise to 36.9 million tonnes. This huge consumption growth warrants fast capacity augmentation by the industry, close to 1 million tonnes on an annual basis.
Indian economy grew by 7.1 percent in the financial year 2016-17, at a rate lower than the 8 percent achieved in 2015-16. The GDP was impacted by the effects of demonetization, and reflects a continued slump in investment. Growth was dragged by excess production capacity, overinvestment on corporate balance sheets, and bank lending inhibited by stressed assets. Whereas the lower GDP growth rate impacted the paper industry’s overall growth, the factors which lowered the GDP also seems to have directly affected the operation and sales realization of the industry. However, in the near term, India’s economy is set to grow at 7.4% in the current fiscal year 2017-18, on the back of pick-up in consumption demand and higher public investment. This augurs well for the growth prospects and plans of the Indian paper industry.
Paper Mart’s biennial survey, Top Paper Companies in India, takes into account all major operating companies for the listing purpose. The rankings are separately done on the parameters such as Production Capacity, Actual Production, and Turnover. In addition to the three ranking lists on these parameters, a final ranking list of ‘Top Paper Companies in India’ has been prepared by averaging the rankings obtained on the three parameters, viz. Production Capacity, Actual Production, and Turnover.
Apart from the above parameters, other parameters such as CSR, water & energy consumption, exports, etc. are also included, though not as ranking, to highlight the all-round and qualitative development of the companies. The rankings done by us are in no way exhaustive, and are just indicator of overall landscape of the Indian pulp and paper industry and are largely based on the data furnished by the companies directly to us or the data mined from annual reports.
