Mondi Invests EUR 20 Million to Upgrade its Austrian Mill

The full benefit of the upgrades is expected from the first quarter of 2025. The energy-efficient projects will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent and gas consumption by 25 percent, while also increasing operational safety.

Mondi has announced good progress on the EUR 20 million investment program at its Neusiedler uncoated fine paper mills in Austria. The full benefit of the upgrades is expected from the first quarter of 2025.

The four-key projects at the Kematen pulp and paper mill included rebuilding the recovery boiler and associated infrastructure to increase energy efficiency & improve overall performance; upgrading pulp dryer from gas burners for air heating to steam heat exchangers to eliminate emissions and further improve safety; installing a new steam accumulator to balance fluctuations in steam demand to improve efficiency and turbine performance; and revamping the steam turbine with a new rotor to increase electricity production.

Additional enhancements included a new steam system & heat recovery at the paper machine, and winder optimization to improve customer reel output.

The program further included upgrades at the Theresienthal site to improve the efficiency of paper machine’s steam and condensate system, increasing automation in the additive kitchen, and introducing a refined winder concept.

“We are proud to invest in technology that drives efficiency, reduces emissions, improves product quality, and strengthens our resilience. These measures will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent and we will consume around a quarter less gas in future, all contributing to our sustainability commitments,” said Florian Döbl, Managing Director of Mondi Neusiedler.

The projects are funded with support from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery plan.
