Turkish paper giant Eren Holding has submitted plans to redevelop its Shotton paper mill located in Flintshire, North Wales, United Kingdom, into an advanced, state-of-the-art facility, having an annual manufacturing capacity of 750,000 tonnes containerboard and 210,000 tonnes of tissue paper.

As per the June 17, 2024 application, the Shotton mill redevelopment will include the transformation of the existing main site, expansion into the adjacent vacant land present north of the main site, and development of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

This would reduce the import of these materials into the UK, as well as increase the domestic use of recycled paper.

The company said it envisioned making Shotton Mill one of the UK’s largest and technologically advanced paper mills. The plan would have lower impact on the environment and local character than an existing approved scheme to create a corrugator machine on the same spot, it added.

The redevelopment project, estimated to be worth around USD 691.9 million, would be carried out in two phases. The first phase is scheduled to be operational in 148 acres in 2024.

The new equipment formed part of Eren Holding’s plan to move production at its Deeside facility away from the newsprint market.

This would be Wales’ largest inward investment worth USD 767.55 million.
