Growing up surrounded by the nuances of the pulp and paper industry, Ms. Ruchica Garg Kumar developed a passion for both the craft and sustainable practices. Her inspiration to enter the pulp and paper industry stemmed from family’s commitment to quality and innovation; her father’s and uncles’ dedication to building a successful business instilled in her the values of hard work and resilience. However, her journey began more personally—after spending 10 to 12 years as a ‘helicopter mom’. “Initially, I didn’t enter the industry with the agenda of breaking the glass ceilings. I simply wanted to prove to myself that I still had in me what it takes to be successful,” the Director at Ruchira Papers Limited shares with Paper Mart.
Paper Mart: Can you walk us through the journey in the pulp and paper industry, and who is your source of inspiration?
Ruchica Garg Kumar: As a second-generation leader in a paper production company founded by my father and uncles, I have the unique opportunity to carry forward a legacy while forging my own path. Growing up surrounded by the nuances of this industry, I developed a passion for both the craft and the sustainable practices that can redefine it.
My inspiration to enter the pulp and paper industry stemmed from my family’s commitment to quality and innovation. Watching my father and uncles dedicate themselves to building a successful business instilled in me the values of hard work and resilience. However, my own journey began more personally—after spending 10 to 12 years as a stay-at-home ‘helicopter mom’. I sought a way to re-enter the workforce as I wanted to immerse myself in a work environment that would reignite my passion and purpose.
I simply wanted to prove to myself that I still had what it takes to succeed. As I navigated the challenges of a traditionally male-dominated environment, I realized that my presence was part of a broader change. I was not just adapting; I was becoming a voice for women in the industry, demonstrating that we belong at the table.
PM: What major challenges have you faced in the industry, and how did you overcome them?
RGK: The major challenge I faced in the industry was to find my voice in a male-dominated field. Initially, I didn’t enter the industry with the agenda of breaking the glass ceilings. I simply wanted to prove to myself that I still had in me what it takes to be successful. As I navigated the challenges of a traditionally male-dominated environment, I realized that my presence was part of a broader change.
I was not just adapting but I was becoming a voice for women in the industry, demonstrating that we belong at the table. Once I regained my confidence, the tougher challenge emerged, that is, proving that I truly deserved my seat at that table.

PM: Please share any crucial moment in your career that shaped your path.
RGK: A pivotal moment in my career occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic when the demand for paper products plummeted almost overnight. As a company, we faced the daunting challenge of selling our paper in a virtually non-existent market. This experience forced us to think creatively, bring new strategies to the table, and explore new avenues for our products. We reached out to different sectors, identifying their emerging needs, and adapted our offerings accordingly. This crisis not only tested our resilience but also underscored the importance of agility and innovation in times of uncertainty.
PM: How do you maintain a work-life balance while managing your responsibilities?
RGK: Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial in a demanding industry like pulp and paper sector. However, I try to manage my responsibilities by prioritizing my time, and setting boundaries that allow me to dedicate moments to my family and personal interests. This balance not only keeps me energized but also enhances my productivity and creativity at work.
