International Paper to Close its Pulp and Paper Mill in Georgetown

The mill in Georgetown produces approximately 300,000 tons of fluff pulp designed for incontinence products such as diapers and other absorbent items. The mill also produces freesheet papers that it sells to Sylvamo. The full closure of the mill is expected by the end of 2024.

International Paper has announced the permanent closing of its Georgetown Pulp and Paper Mill, expected to impact 600-700 workers. The full closure of the mill is expected by the end of 2024.

‘‘The decision is especially difficult because of the impact on hardworking employees, their families and the surrounding communities,” said Bernie Chascin, Georgetown Mill manager, International Paper.

The mill in Georgetown produces approximately 300,000 tons of fluff pulp designed for incontinence products such as diapers and other absorbent items. The mill also produces freesheet papers that it sells to Sylvamo, a paper company that produces uncoated freesheet for paper products such as cut size and offset paper. The strategic contract that the partners will terminate as of December 31, 2024, as per International Paper.
